Dental implants
What are dental implants?1
Dental implants are like anchors placed in your jawbone to support artificial teeth. They serve as strong bases for replacement teeth, either fixed (permanent) or removable, which are designed to look like natural teeth.
Dental implants
vs dentures1
Dental implants usually made of titanium, are placed in the jawbone, acting as artificial roots for replacement teeth. Dentures, made of materials like metal or acrylic, are removable and sit on top of the gums, serving as substitutes for teeth rather
than replacements.
Why go for an implant?1
Most people who have lost one, several, or all of their teeth can opt for dental implants. Typically, if you’re healthy enough for a tooth extraction or root canal, you’re likely eligible for dental implants. An ideal candidate is one that:
- has good general and oral health
- has a fully grown jawbone
- has enough bone in the jaw to hold the implant or are able to have a bone graft
- has healthy gum tissue with no periodontal disease
- doesn’t have any health conditions that affects the body’s ability to heal bone
- doesn’t smoke
- is willing to commit several months to the process
Dental implant
maintenance2
Caring for dental implants are not so difficult nor different from real teeth:
- Brush morning and night, and floss daily
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Avoid smoking.
- Use a mouth rinse that can help reduce infection.
- Go for regular check up.
Dental implant
aftercare2
It takes time to recover after surgery, perhaps up to 3 days before resuming with normal activities. It is normal to experience swelling/bruising in the gums and face, pain and minor bleeding. Follow these aftercare tips:
- Avoid hot food and drinks.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently.
- Avoid hard foods like nuts.
- Practice good oral hygiene by rinsing after meals to remove any food particles.
