Dentures

What is a denture?1

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. A person will be able to bite, chew, and converse without discomfort as a result of this. Complete dentures provide an aesthetic benefit to the elderly by maintaining a natural look to the face, particularly by providing support to the lips and cheeks, which may have collapsed due to tooth loss.

What is denture abrasion?2

The mouth naturally changes as people age, which might impact the fit of dentures. The ridges of the bone and gums can diminish, resulting in ill-fitting dentures. Infections, sores, and gum swelling might develop as a result of this. This also applies to persons getting used to wearing dentures for the first time and are experiencing soreness or small irritations, which is referred to as denture abrasion.

SYMPTOMS3

  • Red inflamed painful mouth
  • angular cheilitis

CAUSES3,4

  • Wearing upper complete denture
  • Not cleaning the denture
  • Dry mouth
  • High carb diet
  • Diabetes

What other denture issues could cause gum soreness?

Gum disease (usually called gingivitis) is caused by plaque accumulation along and beneath the gum line. This will make gums sensitive and possibly cause them to bleed, which can lead to an infection.

To relieve denture abrasion

The GENGIGEL® Mouthrinse is a well-suited product to use for denture abrasion because it soothes the gums while also avoiding inflammation and infection. The GENGIGEL® Gel is great for keeping gums healthy under a denture. It also helps with dry mouth symptoms and keeps the plate firm in the mouth, decreasing irritation.
